SpoilerTigerstar's first book as Shadowclan's leader, he attempts to lead a dog pack to Thunderclan's camp, makes Darkstripe his lackey, and attempts to kitnap his children. Bluestar reveals her secret to her children and dies happily knowing she has their forgivness.

these books are so tricky for me to rate, but I've kind of settled into a system. I think. I'm going to call it books I read for fun...I think I've unofficially made 3.5 my standard rating for books that are either "fluff" or straightforward whatever (like historical fiction with no depth, if that makes sense) or books intended for younger readers, like middle grade. I've kind of set 3.5 as the highest rating I'll give them, and I'll take quarter or half or full stars from that. these books for SURE would be 5 stars if I rated on enjoyment alone. they're so adorable, and I want to give them all the stars just for the fact that the authors came up with so many cute names for things. cats grooming each other is called sharing tongues?! five stars!! cars are monsters, and the road is the thunderpath...humans are twolegs and housecats are kittypets. I mean, if those aren't genius phrases idk what is 💕 so cute I can't stand it.

so idk if I've done spoilers for any of these books so far, but I have stuff to say?! so.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

some stuff I didn't like in this book:
(or in the series up to this point)

• the whole thing with Bluestar's "madness" is SO drawn out. I'm sure it's for something like, for Fireheart to save everyone and be the best leader of ever, thunder clan has to reach its lowest point. but meh. I found myself hoping she'd die. I thought she was such a badass leader until the tigerstar (Tigerclaw) betrayal, and I hated seeing her brought so low.

• also really annoying when so many cats were angry when Fireheart went behind Bluestar's back (although, come on, did he really?!) and set up the meeting with Tallstar, who is possibly the only decent leader left at this point... it made ME angry that so many cats couldn't see that Bluestar hadn't done anything to lead in forever, and Fireheart had basically been running the clan since he became deputy. but I def have a soft spot for Fireheart, so maybe I'm giving him too much credit. also, I don't think there's any betrayal in taking steps to avoid physical confrontation, and I was glad to see so many cats acknowledge his wisdom afterward.

• how is it decided when a cat is an elder? every decision is huge in this whole world, but when a cat thinks he's old he's just like "meh, I'm tired. time to be an elder." ?! my real problem with it this book was with Speckletail (if I've got the name wrong, I'll edit it later). her kit gets snatched up by a hawk and she's just like, meh well I'm too old to have more kits so I'll live with the elders. but Whitestorm is said to be an old warrior many times, yet he's not an elder. do all warriors want to die in battle? was Speckletail never a warrior then? I don't want it to be a male vs female thing, but damn. how can I not draw conclusions when a female who's too old to have kids just sort of becomes useless and retires?! do not like. nope nope.

• that's another thing...if she wasn't a warrior, what was her role? because they were all trying to figure out what her deaf kit could do within the clan when a hawk swooped in to solve that problem. what will become of Brightpaw now?! (seriously, Lostface? come on, lol).

• Cloudtail is such a confusing character. he's a pain the whole book until he learns a lesson or is tested somehow and I start to like him as he shows promise. it's happened the past two books. Fireheart is also WAY too lenient with him, and I feel like he's not called out enough for it.

• SUPER drawn-out arguments between Fireheart and Sandstorm got really tedious really fast. idk why they spent most of the time arguing. was it for the purpose of the big declaration of love at the end? (which was actually kind of adorable!) I also didn't like that Fireheart held her back from dangerous stuff to protect her, and no one ever corrected that behavior. Sandstorm is a badass cat and she doesn't need a man holding her back. sentiment. pshhhhhh. although, kind of Keen to see how it's written if our main character fathers kits. in a children's book. will they remember that one time they went hunting together alone or something?

things I liked!!:

• all of the other things?!

• Tigerclaw (/Tigerstar?) is a really good villain. he's clever and resourceful, and always follows through on threats. I don't fully understand what drives him apart from ambition, but I really enjoyed him as the looming threat in the distance. since Runningnose admitted their last leader wasn't granted nine lives from star clan, I'm kind of hesitant to believe that Tigerclaw was either. also, did he name a deputy? idk if it was mentioned? maybe I just forgot.

• dogs are the worst. I was worried after the prologue, but I'm glad they only showed up for the final battle. (I don't actually dislike dogs, I just think they're super dependant and stupid and the thought of being inside dog brains for more than a chapter is not a thing I wanted to see. so I'm glad that's a whole different series I don't have to worry about 😂)

• Cinderpelt!! I just adore her. I think she has a thing for Fireheart which haha NO. it's kind of cute until you realize he was her mentor when she was a kit and then it's just kind of creepy. but if it's just a friendship, and it stays this way, I think it's really sweet.

• the return of Graystripe!! he was very annoying in the first book, but he's grown on me. with his kits in River clan and Tigerclaw's kits in thunder clan...and Bluestar's kits in River clan...I wonder if it's leading toward the four clans forming one giant clan of cats? united against stupid dogs and camping twolegs and other threats. or maybe it's just leading to an eventual time of peace? *shrug*

• I love how complicated the relationships are between individual cats and between clans. I like knowing a middle grade series spends so much time on the idea of loyalty and different divisions. I always like when clans units to fight a common enemy or when cats in different clans trust each other to help ALL cats. I think everyone needs to remember how even though we're all from different places, look different, have been tasked differently...whatever it may be, that we're all fighting and living and doing the best we can, and if we embrace our differences - also and especially if we make our weaknesses our strengths - it's easier to see how much everyone really had in common. maybe I'm getting too philosophical for children's books about warrior cats. meh.

• when Fireheart sensed Yellowfang in his dream!! omg!! I was cheering, lol. I loved that cat.

• very interested in Bramblepaw (and Tigerclaw's other kit, but a little less so)... he kind of reminds me of Brackenfur(?) when he started as an apprentice. I love how observant Bramblepaw is, and it was kind of fun to see him immediately call out Fireheart for not liking him, haha.

• my boy Fireheart. ugh. I'm so proud of him, lol. he's come such a long way since sitting in his backyard staring longingly at the forest. I can't wait for him to become Firestar omg <3 please don't drag it out. please please.
