I will admit to staying up late to finish this book. While the writing and the plot has stayed the same in style, the number of books that have come before this one have upped the complexity of the characters and events to a point where guessing how it all will end is getting trickier and trickier.

Loyalty and betrayal are the central themes of these books, and this one in particular. I like the way the authors portrayed how disloyalty affected all the characters in the story and how flawed they've made the main character. It's easy to throw in "flaws" purely for show when you try to make your main character relatable, but Fireheart's flaws get him in trouble, without his decisions being illogical. Emotional, certainly, but that's what makes him believable. He's also starting to learn about his own flaws, but that doesn't mean he's magically free from them (e.g. his irrational dislike for a kitten just because said kitten looks like his father, a traitor). And I really like that.
