I enjoyed the new format of this book but I can see that Higashino has given up trying to be as clever and infuriatingly obtuse with his solutions. However, that did make for a slightly more enjoyable read.

X bakal tergeser dari novel Keigo ter paling menurut ku, di novel ini detektif kaga gak cuma fokus mencari pelaku dan menyelidiki kasus pembunuhan, tapi dia juga menyelidiki hail sedetil mungkin yang mana kebenarannya itu memiliki makna berarti di setiap cerita. selalu gak jauh-jauh dari soal keluarga dan itu heart warming bgt, kalo di kesetiaan mr. X, cerita dibumbui dengan percintaan yang bikin aku jd naruh perasaan ke ending ceritanya, jd lebih emosional dan di cerita ini lebih ke heart warming bgt. Dibalik setiap cerita pasti ada kebenaran yg bisa dipetik

I am really becoming very fond of Higahino. In every book he has surprised me. This one is a perfectly crafted murder tale where the murder takes second place to the Columbo-like working back (not quite but you can easily guess the culprit about 2/3 through. But he is original in his slicing horizontally through the vertical plot timeline, taking time with each chapter reveling characters, their lives, how they played (or did not) in the outcome. I wish he would be translated more becuase he is a fine craftsman.

Menurutku kasus dalam buku The Newcomer ini lebih kompleks yg melibatkan banyak orang. Ternyata satu bab dengan bab yg lainnya saling berhubungan. Endingnya pun memuaskan. Suka banget sama penyelesaian kasusnya

A bit long winded, but everything came together wonderfully. I’ll definitely end up finishing both series by this author, as long as they keep being published in English too!

Whenever I read a Japanese novel, I always ended up picturing the actors and actresses I know from watching a gazillion Jdramas.
Reading this one was no different. In fact, I imagined Kaga as Jun Matsumoto's character in 99.9, though Jun was a lawyer in 99.9. Uesugi in turn became Jun's boss in 99.9. Kaga's characterization is just similar to Jun's in the drama, quirky, quick-witted, secretive when he figured out stuff before anyone else.

Mineko Matsui I pictured was that woman who was the lead character in Kimi wa Petto who adopted Jun's character in that drama (yes another Jun drama.)

I could totally make a cast of characters chart with the actors' photos beside each one. haha.

Sorry this wasn't an actual review of the story itself. I just wanna relay how I pictured the cast of characters... or maybe I just miss Jun (and Arashi) so much. lol
