A childhood favorite, just as good as I remember

The student book club I joined at EL decided to read this book. I thought it was pretty good, and the idea for it was neat, though this idea of a perfect society is sort of a theme I have been reading in a lot of YA books as of late. It reminded me of "Uglies" and "Feed," etc.

It was really good. It was captivating. The plot was fast and it hooks its readers. There is no overload of information, which keeps things going and interesting. The characters are easy to relate to, they are brave and good but they also have very human flaws. The cliffhanger at the end will definitely leave readers wanting the sequel. I would recommend this book to anyone, even those who don't like science fiction.
adventurous

While I enjoyed the premise, I felt like a bit of the plot was forced, and the characters jumped to unrealistic conclusions. However, it was still compelling and interesting, slightly dystopian in form, and I enjoyed the read.

My nine-year-old checked this out from the library, and I found myself with no reason not to read it (and her request to read it as a big impetus). I found it rather predictable and a bit lacking, but still enjoyable. The characters are...okay. I didn't particularly like or dislike them, which left me a bit disappointed.

A few years ago, one of my nieces had this as required reading, and part of me can understand why. There are some themes within it that bear discussion. I'm curious what my nine-year-old will have to say about it when she's read it.

Story line was just too simple and predictable. Even for a children's book.

My daughter (grade 5) read this book in school and wanted me to read it. It was surprisingly good.

This book was incredible! I first read this in elementary school long ago, and just reread because I am reading it with my sixth grade students. I remembered the general premise, but no real specifics. I was expecting, as with any kids book, a sort of nostalgic feel and appreciation for children's literature, but Duprau truly created a work of art here--other than the age of the protagonists, this could fully be a young adult/adult novel! The idea is creative, the themes are well developed but not exploited or overly obvious, and the suspense truly kept my heart racing! Would recommend this to literally everyone!
