Slowly progressing plotline and not as riveting as similar young adult novels.
I'm mildly angry at this book, for having such an interesting premise and then making so little of it. I'm aware I'm not this book target audience, but still.
a VERY quick read. characters somewhat irritating, but they were 12 year olds & therefore don't have fully developed prefrontal cortexes, so maybe the author was just being realistic...
How dreary it would be to live in the city of Ember; mostly during Lina's time. I cannot even imagine something like light being sacred, but when you live in a city with no natural light, it is.
City of Ember had many themes and messages behind it, almost too many, but I loved that it was two children that decide to save the day. It was quite easy to fall in love with the characters and the book, thus making it a quick, entertaining read. Jeanne DuPrau really puts you in the midst of things and makes it so when the lights go out, I felt the same feelings as the characters. I even caught myself holding my breath once waiting for them to come on. I am looking forward to continuing the series, so I can see what happens next.
I also had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook and found it to be hypnotizing. Although it was not a complete production, sporadically, at important intervals, there would be sound effects which added a whole other layer to the story because it helped you hear what the characters were hearing.
Student Reviews:
*City of Ember is an exciting book about two kids who get chosen to do a job. They had the job the other one wanted so they switched. They started finding out where they are at and that they are running out supplies. Throughout this books it gets really exciting and suspenseful about what will happen next. When you finish this book you will want to read the next book because of how good it was. –Sam B., 8th grade 16-17
*City of Ember is a very good book, where everything you have known for your whole life just leads you to another mystery. When Lina finds an ancient paper dating back 200 years ago that is all chewed up upon, caused by Lina's little sister's mouth. Lina goes straight to Doon, trying to figure out what everything on the paper could mean. You end going through the whole city of Ember finding out what lies inside the city. What still amazes me is how Lina and Doon sticks together throughout the betrayal of others. -Cristhel G., 8th grade 16-17

This was so good. The ending was a little quick, less described as the beginning of the book. I finished the book quickly (in less than a day) and I'm eager for the rest. :)
First book of the new year! Pretty good dystopian kids' book. It reminded me a lot of the The Giver, which I read recently. There's a society that was meant to be more or less perfect and save everybody from themselves. Everybody is assigned a job, although in The Giver, they were assigned a job by what they would be good at. In The City of Ember, they just randomly choose jobs and are evaluated in 3 years to see if they're any good. Seems kind of inefficient, if you ask me. Anyway, there are a lot of coincidences that you have to look past, but I thought it was pretty good. Cliff-hanger ending, though, which means I'll have to get the other books. I think somebody (Beth?) said they weren't so good, but I need to know the rest of the story.
I loved this book, I got it an a suggestion from Amazon and did't know what to expect when reading it. I love how Ms. DuPrau had such vivid imagery, even after having read this over 3 years ago I can still picture of what the City of Ember looks like. She made me feel like a real place that I have been before. This has been my favorite book since the day I read it, and it is a must read by people of all ages.
I loved the concept. Great book for YA. A bit too simple for me though.
