Things bugged me in this audiobook version that I don't remember bugging me when I read the print edition. I started to question the feasibility of the whole premise--& I try hard not to do that because it is fiction after all! I just couldn't help it this time. I was motivated to grab and shake the main characters more than once! Still, I got book 2 from the library so we'll see if it bugs me as well.
I like the book, ideas, and characters. But I just can't stand the plot, this book is very flat in plot lines. I felt like I was still in the beginning of the book while I was at the "climax"! I read the book for a Book Club project in school and the other group members agreed with this point. It needed more of an organized set of events, it would have been a nail bitter and something you just couldn't put down. If somehow Jeanna DuPrau reedited this book, kept all of the events the same but changed the order I would definitively read it again.
Had I read this when I was young, I think it would have been one of my favorite books; as it is now, it was a struggle to get through because it's meant for a younger audience. A good story nonetheless.
I reread this after not reading for a few years. Of course, it didn't have the same affect but I still remember why I liked it so much when I was younger.
More like 2 1/2. This book is not bad. But it has no potencial to get under your skin. There are no emotions, it's really superficial. The main plot is to find the way out from Ember and you shoudn't care about anything else... You don't feel like you actually know the characters like they are your own friends, because the area of their feelings and thoughts is so small.
There are many better books to read.

I read this once before when I was in high school, so it wasn't as exciting as it was the first time. I think it's just because I'm dystopian-ed out.
Good read, but it wasn't the best dystopian book I've read.

Easy enough plot to follow, but not great world building to get me to understand why there was a fully functioning city underground and no one thought to try and get out.
I like this book. It was recommended to me by a student, and it has some really great themes. The ending leaves the reader wondering what will happen next for the characters (lucky for us there is a sequel?). That's the sign of a good book. :) Read it all today. I might read the sequel, The People of Sparks....but it's not a priority.
Wow! What a good little book! I wonder if the next installment holds up.
If it weren't for the fact that I was volunteered to participate in the Staff Battle of the Books at the school I'm student teaching at...I wouldn't have ever picked up this book. I'd honestly never even heard of the book until it was assigned to me. I'm so incredibly happy that I had the opportunity to read this book. I'm a huge fan of dystopian-themed books and this one caught my interest before I had even finished the introduction. The only downside to reading this book is I now have to add three more books (the full series has 4) to my reading list that's already at 600 books. I can't wait to find out where the story takes the citizens of Ember next.
