This was a read aloud when I was a kid and I loved it. I’m excited to read the rest of the series now!

I was first introduced to City of Ember by the 2008 Movie. Which I've always enjoyed but wanted more of due to the lack of questions answered and very open ending. This helped fill in some of the holes and yes, left some more big ones to be filled by the next books in the series. This sits on the younger end of middle-grade and I love that it's bringing a different kind of story into that genre. Due to the very basic writing style some older readers may not be able to get into this enough to appreciate how unique and intriguing the story actually is. I loved how easy it was to picture the city Jeanne DuPrau created. The character building was a little lacking and the plot had some issues. However at the same time I feel like I can't judge that very fairly based on the fact that I knew the story going in from seeing the movie first. Overall it's a super fast, lighthearted yet thought-provoking read, great for in-between books or with your family/students.

Side Note: The audiobook is full of fun special sound effects and background noises by the way. Which I both loved and sometimes found annoying.

I think this book is great for middle school kids to introduce the dystopian novels. While I wanted more from it, I learned to appreciate it much more towards the end, especially when...hm I won't be able to tell more info due to spoiling!

I really enjoyed this book. It was exciting and interesting and well-written all the way through. My one and only gripe, and it is a very small one, is that the kids were a little too innocent and naive for me, though I understand that they haven't read nearly as much dystopian sci fi as I have. There were times, though, when something seemed really obvious to me but they weren't getting it, and I often felt that I was several steps ahead of them. Still, it was a great read and I would definitely recommend it.

Watched the film first and then saw the book in a 2nd hand shop & picked it up ! Loved reading this and it kept me engaged throughout + quite “easy” to read a chapter or two at a time

Stoked for the sequels
