I really liked this book. I think I like reading young adult books because they go so fast! This book was quite a bit like the movie (which I loved) but more detailed.
The City of Ember is probably better suited for younger audiences as the plot seemed too flat and the literary devices had to be explained in a matter of fact way that ruined their effect. The characters honestly annoyed me and the storyline was quite forgettable.
I really enjoyed this read, Lina's grandmother made me emotional, and the idea of having to be the grown up for so long that you are relieved when someone else takes care of you really struck a chord. I found the methods of the Builders to be really frustrating, which took away some of my enjoyment of the story, but the internal logic was there. Assuming that the Builders really were that stupid, none of the rest of the story is illogical. I also enjoyed seeing the kinds of adults you can count on and those that you cannot. I did feel as though it were a less well written version of The Giver and though it IS a children's book, it can be somewhat insulting to their intelligence at times, which is why I didn't rate it higher.

i read this book as a kid and i absolutely loved it. i was happy to re-read it again as an adult and have just as much fun with it.
there are certain little details that left me with questions, but overall i think this is such a strong story and unique concept.
