The arson plot wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I will say, although I find the love-Reyes-hate-Reyes-fear-Reyes-love-Reyes cycle exhausting, I appreciate that the times she does something real stupid and makes him mad, it doesn't affect the foundation of his feelings for her. So at least I'm no longer stressing that he's going to never speak to her again. Also, I continue to not understand Swopes but I do love Reyes moving in down the hall .
This series continues to get better with each book. Fifth Grave picks up just days after [b:Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet|13538992|Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson, #4)|Darynda Jones|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1338721218s/13538992.jpg|18670691].
Fifth Grave opens with Charley working a case, following a clients suspected cheating husband. After calling Cookie in as bait to find out if the man would in fact cheat, things get a little crazy when the guy discovers he's being set-up. We end up with the guy spending the night in jail and Cookie being relegated to a conceal and carry class. Yet, this is only one thing that Charley has to deal with. The others being the many deceased women showing up in Charley's apartment, the arsonist that started burning down buildings in the previous book strikes again, and not to mention the fact that Reyes has moved in next door.
One of the things I like about Darynda Jones is that she's able to balance all of these intersecting and sometimes conflicting storylines with ease. Maybe it helps that Charley herself seems to be all over the place (self-proclaimed ADD) that she's able to tackle multiple things at once, I don't know. I do know, however, that oftentimes when other authors try things like this, it's so easy to get confused and mixed up, but Jones always handles it really well.
We also are given a lot of much needed Charley and Reyes time. I like that Jones has be ratcheting up his appearances in the books as the story progresses. Trust me, there's no shortage of steam between these two, and it almost seems like they come to an understanding with each other in regards to their relationship.
As usual once you get to the end, you will be ready to dive right into the next book
[b:Sixth Grave On the Edge|16061295|Sixth Grave On the Edge (Charley Davidson, #6)|Darynda Jones|/assets/nocover/60x80.png|21849143]. But it looks as though it won't be released until 2014. I sense I series re-read coming on!

Charley Davidson is back! After a really strong debut, I felt the last two weren't up to the same level, but Charley is back in all her wisecracking glory..
This has to be one of the best story with a lot of comedic relief. I loved this book of the Charley Davidson story!
So you want to know what life is like for Charley being a grim reaper. Well how about during an undercover mission to catch a cheating husband…hey a girl has to make a living some way. So anyways during the mission Charley’s assistance, Cookie is discovered and a shot out occurs in a bar. Charley is almost hit with the bullet. Luckily she falls into the arms of sexy, Reyes. Oh and did I mention that Reyes is Satan’s son.
Charley can’t let herself get distracted by Reyes. Well not 100% distracted. There is a serial killer on the loose.
I can remember reading the first book in this series and loving it. I was instantly hooked. It was not just the great characters but the humor as well. I had forgotten that a little until I picked up the latest book in this series. O-M-G and R-O-F-L.
Even though this was a fast read and I mean fast I still had to stop and put it down numerous times. This is only because of all of the awesome quotes at the beginning of each chapter. I had to share them with my co-workers. Yes, I should have saved this book for at home reading and not on my break and lunch reading at work. It was good.
Charley is her normal crazy self. So glad that she and Reyes are hooking up and taking it to the next level. She is actually using the key Reyes gave her to his apartment. Fifth Grave Past the Light is a laugh out loud, rip-roaring, entertaining read!

Fifth Grave started off a little slow but once the momentum picked up it held steady to the end.
The good:
- the serial killer plot was interesting.
- Reyes in human form. He's developing a personality and it's kind of funny and sweet while still exuding his sexy Son of Satan bad boy edge.
- Reyes's single minded devotion to Charley "Nothing and no one interests me besides you" - and he means it.'
- Artemis is still a doll.
- Cookie and her frying pan: "No killing friends in the house".
The annoying:
-Charley is the most ineffectual supernatural being/grim reaper EVER. Granted when the chips are down she manages to pull out a save - not especially eloquently - but she does it - after much retching, being paralyzed with fear and allowing herself to be beaten half to death. For someone who is supposed to have Satan scared she is very, very underwhelming.
- Charley's lack of interest in studying up and finding out what her powers are.
- Charley's ambivalence about Reyes "He's innocent, he's a killer, he's my guardian angel, I have to turn him in for arson". Seriously I wish she would shit or get off the pot.
- Charley's taxi ride through the Kim Millar arson plot. She isn't hurting anyone. Here's a thought "Shut your mouth and mind your business" - you have more pressing things to attend to - like what exactly are you capable of.
- Charley bemoaning having killed a man again. New rule: if the man you kill is the same one who was trying really hard to kill you up until the moment he dies – free pass, move along.
