Fifth Grave Past the Light
4.5 Stars
As usual, there is a lot going on plot wise. Charley’s new roommates are all the victims of a serial killer with a penchant for blonds; she is still on the track of the serial arsonist and also needs to prove that her latest client’s husband is a cheating scumbag. Not to mention her ongoing issues with the son of Satan, Reyes Alexander Farrow.
Charley and Reyes’s chemistry is off the charts sexy and their scenes together contribute both to their physical and emotional connection. There are also some interesting revelations regarding Charley’s purpose on Earth as well as Reyes’s role in her other life.
The secondary cast are as engaging as ever - Cookie and UB, Amber and Quentin, Rocket and Angel, Gemma and Pierce - all make me remember how much I love the characters in this series. The villains are also compelling although the serial killer plot could have been better developed, and the ending, while traumatic and chilling (never saw that one coming), could have gone very wrong, which would have ruined both the book and the series .
The humor also has its ups and downs. Charley’s tendency toward naming inanimate objects and body parts has been toned down (for which I am eternally grateful) and her new GPS is a nice touch but she can also be a tad too flippant and sarcastic at times.
Overall, Fifth Grave Past the Light is a fantastic addition to the series and I’m eager to find out where Jones is taking the story

are we in for an epic battle between the forces of good and evil?
Absolutely fantastic. Darynda Jones does it again, and without a doubt, does NOT disappoint. Fifth Grave Past the Light could quite possibly be my favorite book of the series. With the humor, plot twists, and of course, Reyes, there is nothing I can negatively say about this book. The ending had me sitting in my chair laughing and jumping up and down in shock! Love love love LOVED this book! And now begins the gruesome wait time for the sixth book....ugh
I love that I got back into the series when most of the books were out because they always leave me wanting more. I love getting to continue to watch the storyline grow and the characters along with the new cases to be solved.love this series so much!

First Thought when Finished: I love Charlie but I am thrilled we got more Cookie in Fifth Grave Past the Light!
Story Thoughts: Poor Charlie! The life of a Grim Reaper is never boring. Her love life is even more complicated that her Grim Reaper job. I am not sure how she maintains her excellent sense of humor but that is what makes me love her. Let's talk about how Cookie played an awesome role in this installment. I loved that she stepped up to the plate in only way that Cookie can (baseball bats, guns, sexy outfits, and snark). She kicked some serious bootie. The story was two-fold in Fifth Grave: the case of the cheating husband and the ongoing arson case. Both were solved but you are going to have to read to find out how. Let's just say that the stakes were higher, the emotions rawer, and the humor over-floweth!
Favorite Parts: Cookie's daughter showing us the sign language she learned. Uncle Bob getting flustered when called on his crush. The very last scene with Charlie and Reyes!
Character Thoughts: I adore Charlie, Cookie, Reyes, Uncle Bob, Garret, and Gemma! They are a great cast that just plays well off of each other. They sparkle, shine, and having amazing wit. I am hoping that we get more of the shrink in the books to come. I also was happy to see Gemma more in this installment. I think we are finally getting to really know her and I like her! Overall the characters are what shine in the Charley Davidson series. I don't think you will be disappointed in them.
Audio Thoughts:
Freaking brilliant! I wouldn't do this series in any other way as I think I would miss Lorelei's voice while reading. I highly recommend these on audio. As always, remember to listen to a sample before purchasing an audio book to make sure the narration works for you.
Final Thoughts: I refuse to look at the release date for the next one because I fear it is 2014 *sigh*

Charley’s apartment is full of blonde female ghosts from all different ethnic backgrounds. Some of them looked like they may have died in the 1980s from the way they are dressed but none of them are talking. They are just scratching at the ground and the walls and scared out of their wits. They appear to be the victims of a serial killer. She doesn’t know why they have all shown up at once but she intends to find out.
I have a huge complaint about how the author always uses departed children. In almost every book, there is a child who died of some horrific crime or abuse. It’s heartbreaking and yet creepy at the same time. One of the blonde ghosts in Charley’s apartment is a seven-year old girl who is scratching under her bed. Charley is able to sleep with her doing that.
Chapter Three begins with a quip that says…667 The neighbor of the beast. I thought it was cute until I realized that 667 would be across the street not next door. Just had to point that out.
Charley suspects her boyfriend’s sister, Kim Millar of being the arsonist who has been burning down buildings because all of the buildings are addresses where Kim and Reyes lived with their abusive father, Earl Walker. Charley thinks Kim is burning down these buildings because Earl used to take humiliating pictures of Reyes and put them in the walls for some reason and Kim wants to get rid of the evidence to protect Reyes from any further humiliation.
The captain of the Albuquerque Police Department, Captain Eckert, has taken it upon himself to start following Charley around. She is afraid he will deem her to be a loon once he figures out that she speaks to dead people and block her from being a consultant with the department.
Another departed woman pops into her apartment and tells her where to find her body but this woman is a brunette. After investigating, Charley discovers the woman is actually alive but has dreams about people dying and those dreams come true.
Charley is also working a cheating husband case. Charley is always busy and she drinks lots of caffeine to get through her days.
Her friend Garrett who died for a few minutes before being brought back to life is researching a prophesy about Charley. When Garrett died, before he was resuscitated, he was sucked into Hell where Satan told him all kinds of things about Charley and Reyes. Of course, the devil lies so he has to sort the fiction from the truth but he thinks Reyes could be a danger to Charley. He’s found an old prophesy that says that Charley will amass an army and among them will be a warrior, a prophet, a scholar, a gatekeeper and a warden.
As always, this book was highly entertaining. Charley’s sarcastic attitude keeps me liking her even though I think she is off her rocker most of the time. Hopefully, the books continue to keep me interested. I think they will.

I try to take notes from Charly’s bad-ass-ness and she doesn’t disappoint in this next book.

HE PROPOSEDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Now that that's out of the way...
This book was nothing if not really really intense. I love how Reyes and Charley's relationship is maturing and as always, the supporting cast of characters is as important as ever.
There's even a fight scene! Sadly Donovan is out of the picture in this book. :'( But the fight scene was really intense. O.o
I cannot wait for the next book. GET IT OUT SOONER SOMEONE!!!!!!!!
Idk if I love charley or reyes more

Thanks to the publisher for a copy to read and give my honest opinion.
Loved it, I'm finally recalling everyone's names which make these books go easier on me. This book is the fifth in this series and the series should definitely be read in order for the utmost reading pleasure because you definitely don't want to miss anything. Charley starts off in the fifth book with a ton of unexpected house guests and ends with a cliffy that makes you want to reach for book six. Charley solves the unexplained arson case in this book along with finding a serial killer that spans decades. Absolutely can not rave enough about this series. Each book just keeps getting better and better.
What did I like? Charley has named most of her body parts which adds for some humor. Reyes and her are almost getting along and she learns some great stuff from Garrett. Cookie has to take a concealed weapons class which was super hilarious, all because she pulled her gun on a guy and Reyes had to catch the bullet. Just an all around entertaining installment.
Would I buy this book? I am loving this series! This would definitely be a series to buy, especially since it's not even finished. It has everything to charm your pants off. Really enjoying it.
Thoughts for the author? Love that cliffy! I'm ready for book six!
Five huge stars of entertainment!
