Loved, loved, loved this book. The author has a true gift with character, dialogue and plot development. I laughed and wondered and wanted to read more at the end. Can't wait until the next one!
I read it in a day. I'm not kidding when I say they are fun & fast reads.
Darynda Jones could make the phone book funny. She’s fabulous. I always compare these stories to the Sookie Stackhouse novels, but way funnier, way sexier, and with better writing and more accessible characters.

The SS showed up then with a brush she’d retrieved from God only knew where.
“Sit on your bottom,” she ordered. “And be still. I have a lot of work ahead of me.”
I sat down and frowned at her while pulling out my hairband. “There’s nothing wrong with my hair.”
“I know,” she said, suddenly defensive. “It’s not really ugly. It’s just dumb.”
Oh, where to start with this one. Charley is up to her eyeballs with 27 dead women hanging around her apartment. None of them are talking to her, they’re all scared and she can’t figure out how to help them. Add to that a PI case she’s working for a woman who suspects her husband is cheating on her, the police chief who’s trailing Charley, curious as to how she’s helping her uncle solve all these cases and she’s figured out who the arsonist in town is and is trying to find a way to keep this person out of prison since she understands completely why this person is burning down the buildings they are.
There’s a lot going on and as always Charley’s crazy observations and wacky thoughts and dialogue had me laughing throughout. She has a new toy, an illegally downloaded GPS app that uses famous voices that was hilarious and made me want one. I love how fast the story pace is with this book. As with previous books, we follow Charley through her day to day life, from working on different cases trying to piece together clues, to going with her to her therapy appointment to her being chased down in Misery, her car. I love how insane her life is and that we get to go right along for the ride with her as she experiences everything that’s thrown her way.
“What do you want for lunch?” he [Reyes] asked.
“I ordered off the menu, actually. Sammy always made me huevos rancheros whenever I asked. They rocked. No pressure.”
He quirked a brow. “How would you like your eggs?”
I tried. I really did. But I glanced at his crotch and it came out anyway. “Fertilized?”
Now Reyes…sexy Reyes. He’s Charley’s new next door neighbor and he gave her a key to his apartment that he wants her to use. She finally does and oh the sexy times they have. I can’t say that a ton of new information comes out between the ongoing storyline of Reyes being created by his father, Satan, to capture/kill Charley but Swopes, who spent some time in hell recently during a near death experience, is slowly remembering bits and pieces of his time there and he has some information that furthers Reyes and Charley’s storyline a bit. There is a fun cliffhanger with Reyes and Charley at the end of the book and damn if it didn’t make me want book 6 right now!
For as fun and light hearted as Charley’s stories can be, there’s always a moment when reality slams her in the face and this book is no different. Charley finds herself in a really bad spot and it’s a moment when I just felt for her. Spoiler alert – she survives (*grin*) but it’s another experience that she’ll have to deal with. And I will admit I did have a few tears show up courtesy of an unlikely source. Gemma’s seeing a new man and he has an interesting story to tell that intersects with one of Charley’s 27 houseguests. It was sad and sweet and it’s a scene I’ll definitely remember in this series.
Charley continues to be a heroine that I love to laugh at and with. The random things she says are so funny I can’t help but love her. Her relationship with Reyes takes some positive steps forward and I can’t wait to see where they go next. The supporting characters continue to shine and add so much depth to this great series. Anytime little Strawberry Shortcake shows up, the fun times just start rolling, especially when she’s brushing hair with a most disgusting choice for a hair brush.
Fifth Grave Past the Light is a completely fun and entertaining read and the series remains one of my must reads.

My feelings in relation to this book are confusing as all get out.
It’s always fun to follow along as the Grim Reaper does one insanely dumb (yet entertaining) thing after another and this volume has the extra benefits of a very interesting case and lots of feels. Charley is at her crazily hilarious best and Reyes brings the sizzle as soon as he steps on the page.
A great entry into the series and one I couldn’t put down once I started.
