Well written, I can understand why this romance blew up on TikTok. I loved the fierce feminism within Chani’s character as well as the openly Jewish representation.
Gabes tumultuous career brings a necessary dramatic flair.Plus his addiction is written and handled well I feel
I love how it’s society’s doubt that brings them together for the original profile and back together full circle for the second one.
Unfortunately I think I am in somewhat of a romance slump, as I wasn’t as enamoured with this as I anticipated I would be.

The book's bright cover caught my attention while browsing my online bookstore. After that, I read the synopsis and figured Funny You Should Ask would be a fun reading experience.
Chani Horowitz and Gabe Parker were likeable characters. I found it interesting that the writing (in two intertwining timelines) allowed the reader to compare two versions of them and understand how they grew and changed in the ten years that separated both interviews. I also really appreciated that the narrative dived into themes such as substance abuse and diminishing relationship partners.
Even so, I think the storyline was too unlikely for my taste. Call me sceptical, but how is it possible to fall madly in love with someone after spending only 3-6 days with them? Despite the fact Chani and Gabe "knew" each other through their careers (and I must say following someone's career for ten whole years is a lot of commitment), I don't think they could know each other enough for love.
I didn't dislike it, but it didn't convince me either.

I never knew what a favorite book was supposed to feel like until I read this book for the second time and devoured it as quickly and happily as I did the first time. Everything from the writing style to the plot, I am obsessed with every inch of this book and have annotated it to bits. Thank you Elissa Sussman for this masterpiece.

Hmm I’m between a 4.75 and a 5 I think I have to give it a five though because I couldn’t put it down. I started this book just wanting to read it before I went to bed and ended up staying up till 4am finishing the book. (Coming back months later dropping this to a 4.75 because I honestly don’t remember the plot of this book.)
The chapters are all very short which helped with the pace of the book and kept it engaging.
It’s a very basic book kind of similar celebrity falls in love with common person like the book “Romantic Comedy.” I realized that is the content I like!
I liked the artistic choices to shift timelines and incorporate articles and blog posts throughout. Kind of reminded me of Carrie Soto is Back in that way. If you’re looking for a feel good read highly recommend!

A slow-burn, second chance romance between Gabe Parker, a movie star cast to play the new James Bond, and Chani Horowitz, the journalist hired to write a profile about him. After a wild weekend that leaves rumors spiraling, they part ways. Now, 10 years later, she gets an offer to write another piece on him. They’re both drastically different people, but some things haven’t changed.
I listened to this on audiobook, and the narrator did a great job using voices to distinguish characters (even if her British accent is subpar). The timeline alternates between the present and a decade ago, which occasionally got confusing when I was listening (might’ve been easier if I was reading a hard copy), but if I gave it enough time, I was usually able to pick up by context.
Ollie is one of my favorite side characters ever. I wish he’d gotten more development, but he’s such a good friend and voice of reality. I appreciate how realistic and flawed the main characters are; Gabe isn’t the perfect golden boy and Chani is a bit cringe tbh. It has some insta-love vibes, which aren’t always my thing. Feels a bit like fan fiction at times, but take it at face value, and it’s a cute, easy, satisfying read.
