Today, most of this text is received wisdom and can be found elsewhere, but it is nonetheless a decent summary of "masculinity" as a concept since the mid-eighteenth century. One of the most interesting aspects to me was his discussion of "modern masculinity" and how it diverged from the "aristocratic masculinity" of the late Middle Ages and Early Modern period. His treatment of "degeneracy" and the new fascist man is, by far, where he is at his best. If you only read a few short parts of this book, make sure to include these two.
