Tore through this really quickly - explored well themes of race, inter-generational trauma, the impact of parents in prison on children, etc. while having a fairly good plot - a little confusing in its switch between characters and time at times

It took a minute for me to get into this story, but once i did it was very well told. Heartbreaking and hard, emotionally it felt like slogging your way through a swamp but with each hard step, you get closer to the healing on the other side. I felt really invested in the characters. This is not a light read, but it was worth it.

I think we can all agree that every family is dysfunctional is some way or another. This book examines that dysfunction, and how it filters down through generations, especially in a family of sisters. while overall I liked the book, I did feel like something was lacking in certain plotlines. Like Lillian and her brother Joe's story...it felt forced. Like the author felt she needed more drama so she threw that in there. And I really would have liked to have seen more focus on the teen twin girls and their stories. But overall I liked it. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
