3.75 stars. Very quick read. I quite enjoyed this family even though it’s a sad story. I want more. The whys of it all. It could have been longer with more.

Family conflict told by four characters. The writing is excellent but I felt like the characters were stiff and difficult to connect with.

Maybe I’ve read too many series books this year, but my heart couldn’t take this one. I got about halfway, and when it was about to be called back to the library, I decided not to push through to finish it. I couldn’t see that it would end well. Maybe I’m wrong? Maybe I’ll finish it after I’ve read a few light-hearted books.

A simple enough story - three sisters reconning with the past, accepting the present, and eventually hoping for the future - written with such a beautiful and captivating narrative I couldn't put the book down. I love the way the chapters flowed and how the reader is able to see through so many different eyes. There are aspects that I wish had been teased out more, but the overall depth of the story and characters was an enjoyable and heartwarming read.

4 1/2 stars. This was excellent. My favorite sort of book--about human relationships and the quest for redemption. Beautifully written, interesting characters, a quick read. I loved it.
And hey, a novel that didn't feel like it had to be 500 + pages long? Bonus points!

DID NOT FINISH: 28%

Definitely not for me. Went a direction I was actively hoping it would not go.

I received this book as an ARC giveaway through Goodreads. I hover between 4 and 4.5 stars for this book.

It was an interesting and quick read. The book is an observation of the psychological impact of family attachment and relationships - how it can lead to self-destruction (psychologically, physically, emotionally). How family can be rebuilt through self-awareness; how family can be built through reliance on one another. It was an emotional read towards the end. I am particularly touched by the relationship between Lillian and Nai Nai - the fact that they are not related (technically), yet they have an implicit bond and help each other strive through difficult times.
