DID NOT FINISH

Thought the light novel was better than anime, it is not

Super light read! If you're a fan of the anime, and have some spare time or don't know what to read next, I recommend this book.

It gives you a lot of insight into Kirito's characters. One of the main issues is his shame over being a solo player—in the anime this is a common thing but in the light novel that is one of his major characteristics. It makes you fall harder for him and his vulnerability and guilt.

The only problem I had with the novel was that it felt really rushed. We don't meet any of the female characters from the anime (Sachi, Liz, etc.) but I looked it up and that's part of the second novel. This one only covers Kirito & Asuna's story. Basically it's the first arc of the show for Aincrad, no side stories at all.

In the year 2022, 10,000 gamers found themselves trapped inside Sword Art Online, a virtual reality metaverse. For the players to regain their freedom, they must fight monsters and conquer one hundred floors in the vast world of Aincrad. The catch though is that if they die in-game, they die in real life.

In the novel, we now journey with the gamers in this maddening task. Eventually, the players were split into 4 rough categories, the majority of which were the waiters; those hoping they would be rescued by people outside/in the real world. They decided to stay put and live off with their initial allotment of money because somebody from the outside will surely rescue them soon right? The second group were players who decided that cooperation was the best chance of survival and created big clans to fight monsters and share resources with. Those who resisted joining any organized band and squandered their resources with drinking and eating were part of the third group of people who started living a life of crime. The fourth smaller portion were a mix of crafters, traders, and solo adventurers like our main protagonist, Kirito.

Amazingly fascinating concept and a cute read! Reminded me of my Ragnarok days during my teens.

A wonderful translation, this first volume took me through the same feels as the show but without a lot of the sides stories (which are in volume 2). It so nice to read and see everything from Kirito's POV, enjoy his utter love and devotion towards Asuna and his determination. What a great read.
