Wow so good. I love love love Jezal. Glokta's storyline was insane. And I am ever more so suspicious of Bayaz. I can't fathom were book 3 will go.

A great continuation of this trilogy, with more grimdark fantasy, gore, and brutality. Some really good laughs to be had in this book, due to the really solid writing and great interactions between the main characters (Glotka especially who's as sarcastic as ever..)
Before They Are Hanged essentially splits itself off into three sub-plots, with Glotka stuck with the rather pathetic defence of Dagoska against the impending Gurkish invasion.
Then you also have the continuation of Ferro, Bayaz, Ninefingers and their journey, with some great character building scenes to drive this subplot along.
Then you have the impending battles lead by Ladisla, as well as the goings on with ThreeTrees and his band of men.
It definitely seems these sets of characters are all due to meet (or clash?!), at some point within the final novel in the trilogy. And with all their very different goals and aims with the world set up by Abercrombie, I am very excited to read the next and final novel!

Abercrombie effortlessly picks up the story where it ended after book 1 and continues to build his gripping, fascinating world. Each chapter follows one of our now familiar characters who bring their own authorial voice despite the third person style. Unusually for a grand narrative like this, there were no characters or storylines I found tiresome - each time a new chapter began I was eager to read the next part of that plotline.
The scale of this sequel is much grander than The Blade Itself but it avoids getting out of hand too early - the gradual revelation leaves you feeling a part of the adventure rather than an observer dragged along too quickly. In fact, I would say the pacing is what makes this book stand out; Abercrombie allows the action to ramp up to a crescendo while still leaving plenty to look forward to in the final part of the trilogy.
