The book continues from the first like it was just another chapter.
The party reaches it's destination after a long and perilous trip and the book stops there in another cliff hanger when they begin the return journey.

The second main arc involving the inquisition's torturer, Glokta, has him playing the hero and demoted back again to simple pawn.

The third main arc involving Logan's old party also moves forward as they join the Union's army to fight Bethod in the north.

Just as the first book, this one feels like a fragment of a single larger book that got divided into book for commercial purposes only.
