4.3 AVERAGE

I don’t quite know how to rate this book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for likeable and evolving characters.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ for plot? Maybe 4 stars.

Overall maybe 4.25⭐️

I don’t know, I super enjoyed reading it but it certainly was not a page turner and I don’t feel the need to immediately pick up #3 (though I certainly will).

It had some great heartfelt moments, some that made me feel a little sick to my stomach, and some that made me chuckle. All in all a better installment than book 1, hoping to continue the trajectory with the last one.

Second read: May 2019
Took off one star from my original rating. Still a solid work but I am just becoming more critical.
I kinda feel the book is overwritten. Especially all the traveloguing parts and their related POVs. I would prefer all the hundreds of pages of crossing deserts and icy lands plus fighting some evil minions should mostly aim for character relationship and development. We got some of those of course - especially for Jezal and Ferro - but the rest, nothing new of their characters I did not already know before they all started the journeys. And one more time I have to head Bayaz giving worldbuilding speeches - which were not that interesting either especially the forbidden romance part- I'll do a Ferro and smack him on the head and scream 'stupid old pink!' to shut him up. Yep, her character grew on me this second time ;)

Thank goodness the book still has Glokta. My ultimate fave character of the whole trilogy. For other POVs I might get distracted over something, but never when I was reading his. And he got to meet all the interesting characters as well, back in Dagoska as well as in Adua, which made his chapters were oh so delicious.

First read: December 2013
Pretty incredible. Fast paced and occasionally hilarious. And yes, it's much darker and shed more blood (and guts) than the first book. The fights became more exciting to read too.
I liked Logen more and more. Glokta, I think I could marry the guy he's just so awesome LOL
I too really enjoyed the back story exposition. Although the tale of Bayaz and Tolomei was pretty cheesy and predictable.

Great world-building, and the battle scenes were awesome. Would recommend to a Game of Thrones / LOTR enjoyer. Predictability issues, but still a fun read

Interesting characters but too much violence. I'll still read the third but not as happy with the second one as the first.
