TJR is a beast of a writer - it felt like I was on the court with them. At times, I found Carrie quite annoying, but I guess that was the point. A great story!!

this book. wow. i have so much to say about this book. taylor jenkins reid did such an amazing job writing this. her narrations of tennis matches were perfectly done, always keeping me engaged in what i was reading. this is my third tjr book and i think this solidified my love for her writing.

we follow carrie soto throughout her journey to become the world's best tennis player. before we get to her comeback, it narrates her life up until her retirement. she was coached by her father for most of her life, and seeing them work together again when she comes back to reclaim her record for most slam wins is quite endearing.

carrie is such an interesting character. i feel like i've never read such a complex main character with her spunk. she has a thirst for winning, she constantly has something to prove, and she's the epitome of a blunt and honest perfectionist. i didn't get her at the beginning and i didn't quite like her either, but i grew to understand her. she's an acquired taste, but after the first quarter of the book, you'll want to root for her.

javier is carrie's dad, a sweet old tennis player teaching his child that she is destined to become a champion. he taught carrie everything she knew, about tennis and out of it. his relationship with carrie is so precious. despite her need to reclaim her title, he just wants her to play good, beautiful tennis. a constant motivating figure, javier is a coach and father all in one.

lastly, we have bowe! i loved bowe. we see him a lot once carrie trains for her comeback. he is such a patient and fun guy and i love how stubborn and persevering he is when it comes to tennis and carrie.

this book taught me a bit about tennis. i, for one, have never really been into tennis. i didn't even know they had different surfaces for tennis. i didn't even know what the major championships were called or where they were held. i didn't know the point system or how sets worked. and this book demonstrates all these things, showing the weight of it all, educating me along the way. i've always loved stories like that. taylor jenkins reid made me want to play tennis from this book.

despite tennis being the primary focus of the story, there are many other topics other that taylor jenkins reid incorporated. she demonstrates the power of media, a double standard for both women and men.

the way taylor jenkins reid created this novel of hers to potray such a realistic world yet manages to keep it fiction is crazy. the characters have so much depth and i followed them through all the highs and lows AND enjoyed it. i loved seeing them overcome their struggles and seeing them soak up the happiness of their wins.

and the ending of it all was fitting. i didn't actually know how it would end. how carrie would be towards the end of the book. how could one person change so much? how would she react if she won? how would she react if she lost? where would she be if either outcome happened? taylor jenkins reid made me guess so much even though i was on the climax of it all. she did not disappoint.

so here i am. hungover from this book. i flew through the pages. i got new save-worthy quotes. i learned things from this fictional story. i got teary eyed. i got to know such kickass characters. so yes, i am going to rate this 5 stars because WOW this story.
