That being said while the Red Queen series didn't suffer from the second book syndrome in Glass Swors, King's Cage DEFINITELY suffered. There were multiple times were I suffered from what I call a reader's block, where I can pinpoint the part in the story where the author works themselves into a corner and desperately tries to claw out of it.
Secondly, where I feel Glass Sword makes up for lack of representation in Red Queen, I feel like King's Cage takes a few steps back seeing as
But it's still worth a read and it's a highly enjoyable one too!

The plot has some complexity, though it annoys me that a lot of the reasoning behind certain events is because the villain has this weird obsession with the main character that also perhaps could have been explained differently.

While I get why Mare would be kept prisoner for so long, I would have preferred more interactions with the court, if not with Maven.
Cameron was an interesting POV for the Scarlet Guard/red side of things, which again left much of the political machinations off the page, but at least gave the basics. Even Kilorn would have been a better choice, in my opinion.
I feel like the final third of the book dragged a bit, at least up until the climax,
Finally,
Overall, this was a strong sequel, and I was surprised by a few things; I'm very excited to read the final book and the short stories.

This book both develops the world, plot and characters in much more depth. We see a different side to unexpected characters which I really liked and didn’t expect, to the extent of appreciating their perspective and even liking them as much as the main characters.
