Marlowe's play is so much fun. It moves quickly and has fantastic dialogue, and for such a short piece, there is depth to Faustus, philosophy explored, peculiarities of religions probed, and fascinating historical context.
The "English Faust Book" was mostly a drag. Marlowe's language is alive and vibrant, while EFB often feels like a bullet-point list summarizing the events of the Faustus story. I did like the last couple of chapters because it finally seemed to dwell on the human aspect of the story.

bro wrote a bunch of fart scenes in between pretentious academic monologues and called it a day. he could have never done what billy did but the 16th century heresy was a slay.
(ps. i know the book is deeper- i did a term of lit analysis on it- but it just didn't stand the test of time as a standalone piece of fiction IMO)

I've never thought I was ever going to read this, but I gotta say that I liked it. Especially the fact that Dr. Faustus summons Mephistopheles in Latin. That was fun. Also, the language used helped me to understand how the second-person singular "thou" was used at the time.

I Love Evil
I was starting to think I just didn't like Faustian classics but I actually really enjoyed this. If you're planning on reading Goethe's Faust I would actually recommend reading this one first because it's so much more streamlined and straightforward so it will give you a better idea of the shape and progression of the story. I could have saved myself so much frustration and confusion if I had just started here!
