This is a very famous story, and my first time reading a version of it. Of course I already knew the premise: Doctor Faustus sells his soul to the Devil. The execution of it was what remained a mystery until now. And I have to say, I really enjoyed it. It was creative and felt like a cross between Frankenstein and Dante's Inferno.

One thing I really like about these older plays is how little direction the playwright gives. Mostly, you just get the character's name and their lines, with entrances and exits and maybe a few props. The rest is left up to the imagination of the director, and that is how plays like Doctor Faustus or Shakespeare's plays can still be so timeless.

I found the introduction of the Seven Deadly Sins very interesting. Also Faustus going between wanting to be saved and wanting to gain more knowledge. He was given chances to turn back but instead kept going forward. Perhaps the most heart-breaking was the ending, where he was calling on Christ for salvation but still wound up choosing damnation.

I'm glad I finally got to read one writer's take on this famous story. I would love to read other versions of it, if I can find them.

very pretty very nice and short

I read this sophomore year too, but apparently I never added it!

I enjoyed it MORE this second read, but it still wasn't one of my favorites. Also, this read through was SO chaotic and was a SPEED READ.

Boring. The best part happens right at the beginning.
