This hurts so good. The full blown pain I felt reading this tore me apart, sewed me up and set my heart free. This is the best messy second chance I've ever read and if you are strong of heart I recommend this book.

Writing was exceptional, she brought out the characters' emotions thoroughly. Multiple flashback scenes were my only hang-up.

This felt very surreal and dream like, you know when your dreaming and it feels so very really but it’s still a little off? Initially the flashbacks were okay because it tidied up some of the explanations but then it just got a little ridiculous... it became a little difficult and confusing to figure out what was flashback and what was current... I honestly didn’t expect that to be the whole story... not everything needs a flashback to be explained. I also wouldn’t understand everyone interconnection to each other if I didn’t already know what this was based off of.... there was a lot more relationship building that could have been done instead of getting sidelined by flashbacks.

I was blown away by this book. I knew nothing when I went into it, only that it is constantly listed as a recommendation by others.
This entire book had my emotions high-strung the whole way through. I fell in love with the two main characters. They were fun and quirky but serious adults at the appropriate times. I am such a sucker for the soul mates concept in this story. This book didn't follow the very common steps you see in most other lesfics. It was refreshing. I found myself crying more often than I expected too, more often than any other book that I can remember.
This book has very easily made it to my top favorites list.

What a beautiful story. The Art of Us sucked me in by the third page. Hughes writes with such passion; I felt the intensity of Charlee and Alex's bond well before they set eyes on each other again. In hindsight, even the title incites passion. From an artistic view, Charlee and Alex's story includes strokes of love, dabs hurt, and stipples of hope. Also, the cover is an image of a particular scene in the book.
I don't care for flashback stories. Usually midway through I'm thinking "Enough already, let's move on." However, with this story, there is a steady balance between Charlee and Alex's past relationship and their current interactions. I was able to learn just enough about their past to understand their present. In addition, just like in the world of art there's the influence of dealers, patrons, and critics, so too are the influences of the minor characters (Cam, Vinny, and Gabby). I love that during Charlee and Alex's "messy" stage, they have a strong supporting trio in Cam, Vinny, and Gabby.
The intimate tension between Charlee and Alex exists throughout the store, so I appreciate that the sex scenes were not overly done. Although, I would have liked it if Charlee used edible paint for the body painting scene near the end...I'll say no more! Overall, this is an enjoyable emotional read, and I'm certain I will reread it again and again.

the plot was messy, not great writing and the characters were under-developed. if this book would've been a hundred pages longe, it would be be much better.
enjoyed it nonetheless and I love that there wasn't any type of homophobia
