anne mccaffrey is one of those authors everyone read as a child that i somehow missed out on. naturally i had to try her out. mostly it was interesting to trace her influence over things i've read (i already knew sarah monette and elizabeth bear's wolf books responded to pern but i can now see mccaffrey all over naomi novik's temeraire books). the illustrations were pretty nice too. 2.5 stars

Very pleasant side track from all the heavy or non-fiction books I tend to read. Amazed that I missed this book after reading so many of A McCaffrey's books. Sweet stories about different aspects of life on Pern.

This was really nice. I have been a fan of Pern for a long while, so it was nice to revisit it.

Pretty hit or miss, tbh. Not her best work.

This pretty little book of short stories is worth a read for those Anne McCaffrey and Pern fans who feel they can't get enough of the dragons. "The Smallest Dragonboy" is the best of the bunch, in my opinion, as it is about little Keevan who fears he's just not good enough for a dragon to want him. I remember reading this one when I was in the 7th grade - it has been reprinted in many of McCaffrey's collections. The other three feel a bit like filler. "The Girl who Heard Dragons" is fleshed out in the novel Renegades of Pern (unfortunately not one of the best of the Pern novels), "Runner of Pern" is fairly lightweight but a nice look at one of the other Crafts on the planet, and finally "Ever the Twain" is yet another tired Impression story. Still, if you must have the full collection, this is a lovely edition.

This delightful group of stories is a sweet, light read. None of the stories focus on the main characters of the other books, giving the reader that little bit more of an insite into 'average' Pern life.

It's fun to read fantasy books every once in a while.
