Got a little bogged down in the middle (*tip* there IS a cast of characters in the back, I wish I had known that from the start!). Keep pushing through, it's totally worth it!
More a history book than a treasure hunting mystery novel - the author is obviously opinionated against the Nazi's and those who worked with them. (not surprising!)
I was unaware of the full-scale looting done by the Nazi's and their lack of care for cultural history. I knew bits and pieces, but wow.

Great book about a piece of WW2 history that isn't often told. Picked up this book after seeing the movie. More people need to learn about these events because it gives more context to the extent the Nazis went to to erase cultures that they thought were "unworthy".
Moderate: Antisemitism, War
The Monuments Men is a well-written, absorbing bit of history about a military unit during WWII tasked with the salvation and restoration to their rightful owners of artwork throughout Europe. The work of several high profile monuments men are traced through seamlessly through the book, as they search out and protect thousands of artifacts. Some of these are named, and their movement as they were taken by the Nazis, is tracked in concert with the expeditionary work of the monuments men. I have seen a few of the pieces so described, and am grateful for the work of these men and women who fought to preserve them for future generations.
It was an inspiring historical account, and I especially appreciated the brief accounts at the end of the various figures involved, both good and bad. Too often, accounts such as these take the reader through the events of the time period, and then seem to abruptly drop them as if they are no longer of interest. That was not the case here.
Well done, Mr. Edsel.

A bit dense at times but cool history to learn about
As a lover of history and museum person, I really wanted to like this book more. I think that the story being told is an important and interesting one, but I thought the book was a little slow moving. It was detailed, but detailed about the wrong things....too much about "this person went here and then he went there" and not enough details about the artwork found/saved and the men doing the work.
