The audio is abridged, which is disappointing. I discovered some of my favorite chapters after I bought the book to see what I missed by listening to the audio.
This is a subject I never knew anything about. It was fascinating. It made the Nazis even more chilling to know how ruthless and petty they were in stealing the art, and willing to destroy it so their enemies couldn't have it. Those men who saved a vast amount of Western art deserve to have their praises sung! There are a lot of places and people to keep track of. The book does seem to be researched thoroughly so you feel he has tried to report fact rather than fictionalized accounts.
non-fiction book with in-depth research on the part of the author. i think i will enjoy the movie when it comes out with george clooney.

An amazing story told from WWII that not many know about. Saving art and history might not feature on the priority list when there's a brutal war going on; but imagine not having millions of paintings, historical manuscripts, beautiful stained-glass churches and other art forms in the world today.
It is heart-breaking to read about the callousness meted out to people and property alike, but there were good and bad on both sides which comes across in the book.

Must read for art history enthusiasts! A very intriguing story, with great characters and primary sources. (though Edsel does gush a bit too much about how great they are, and is very black and white about evil/good at times). At times I wished there were more notes at the back - which is probably the first time that has ever happened to me and goes to show that it is fascinating material.
Absolutely fascinating story, the "Greatest Generation" really was comprised of selfless heroes. If you're at all interested in art, history, or the psychology of war, I highly recommend this book.
Monument’s Men is truly an example of an impeccably researched and marvelously written account of a little known story in history. Edsel's book illustrates that some of the most remarkable stories are in our own histories yet to be acknowledged or expounded upon. The audacity of the looting Germans determined to erase the cultural history of an entire race and the perseverance of those committed to right their wrongs will always stick with me. I feel more enriched for having read this book.
The topic being discussed by the author is extremely interesting, but the author's writing needs work.
