Oof. You know when a book is too real? This novel is a snapshot of 2 queer couples spending the weekend in side by side cabins in rural Ontario. It's highly character and relationship driven, with a lot of authentic dyke processing, gender feels, very authentic (kinky) sex, and interrogation of disability. It took me a while to get the characters but after about half way through I was invested. Very thought-provoking! But also kinda depressing? Full review on my blog!

The argument dialogue was so perfect, seemed like the transcripts from a thousand arguments of long-term toxic couples. I liked the dual perspective, made me think that sometimes people can correct their treatment of others and some people just won't. Sad and frustrating, but hopeful.

Another dissertation read! I chose this work because it was on yet another list of coal for books about queer parenthood. I’d say motherhood is a huge theme in the novel, alongside betrayal, survival, self-realization, self-determination, disability, commitment fears, living “on the edges,” white lies, and more. It also poignantly inspects how sexuality and even particular sex acts can inform/detract from someone’s gender/sexual/familial identity—something I found most interesting in the character of Logan, a trans-non-binary person who accepts labels such as ‘husband’ and ‘boi’ but largely rejects femininity—which causes a bit of a rift with their lesbian lover Ajax.

Overall, I really loved the characterization of Joe since I really felt for her situation (
she ends up getting betrayed and eventually divorced by her wife and partner of 16 years a week after giving birth to their child
). She’s definitely someone you just wish happiness for because they’ve been through so much—as with Ajax, who goes through quite the harrowing medical journey in the latter half of the book.

“An intimate, sexy, queer romance”

I mean, just look at the cover.

This was an intimate portrait of two (...or more) very different complex relationships. It was compulsively readable, believable, surprising, and titillating. There is a LOT to unpack, and was a wonderful book club read last month!

I inhaled this book in one day and it was a rollercoaster of emotion and feelings. Contentment, rage, arousal, shock, questioning, satisfaction, sadness, frustration.

I would highly recommend.
