This was my first Lovecraft read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I know, starting with a short story is not the place to start – yet it is what I managed to get my hands on. I wasn’t about to turn it down due to the fact it is not one of his big hits. A read by Lovecraft – any read – was going to be devoured so I could find out what he was about and whether I wished to continue on to read more.
It is safe to say, I will be reading more.
Short stories never really give you everything there is to know about an author. It is a small insight, a means to quench a thirst. The Shunned House, however, told me much more than I had expected. It was not a perfectly crafted horror story – there was not enough suspense for that, there were nowhere near the shocks you find with the lengthy novels – but it hit home. It hit the basics. For a short story of horror to keep me engrossed throughout is a sure sign that I need to read more.
Lovecraft, I’m coming your way.

What an awesome short story! Written in the 1920s, it’s a nearly 100 year old haunted house story! Definitely recommend this quick read, it takes about 30 minutes.
Folks, it actually took me a year to read this story. I kept falling asleep during the opening exposition, which is extra sad because it's such a clear look to Poe. (Even name checks him.) However, once I got past the first three sections of exposition, this one turned out to be a gem in the last two. Is it vampires? Is it werewolves? No, of course not! It's the elbow of an elder god! Also, the protag makes himself a freaking ray gun. How cool is that?

I have to say, I wasnt a fan of this story. From the description I was given I expected it to be more of a haunted house story and when that turned out to not be the case I got a little turned off.
I'll be the first to admit that I have a hard time reading The Classics, but the style of writing made it hard for me to get immersed in the story and i ended up skimming through most of it. It was a nice, short read, and I thought that the end was interesting, but it wasnt really my cup of tea.

I’m going to give this maybe like a 3.9. i understand that it’s pretty really great horror writing but i just hate, hate an information dump. the first half reads like a stock take of the last month’s obituaries. that being said, the second half was great. it felt fresh, and different, and actually quite scary... it’s alarming as it swells; how many monster house stories could you name of recent years? and they are clearly all based in and around Lovecraft but they just can’t help but miss the mark.
A classic Lovecraft tale with a little paranormal investigation. Fun stuff.
Fact or Fiction??? Lol
As a resident of Providence the tale delightfully came to life with disturbing accuracy. Many times I questioned if it was a story at all or a detailed account of an actual incident and subsequent investigation. The oldest parts of town just lend to that creepy vibe anyway. Well done!
