Laszlo is afraid of the dark, but the dark lives in the same house as him. During the day, it is confined to a specific corner of the basement, but at night, the dark spreads. It has never visited him before, because Laszlo always keeps the dark at bay with his flashlight. But one night, his flashlight goes out, and the dark is there. Many young children will understand Laszlo's fear, and will like the slight humor thrown in at the end.

So cute! Such a good way to show kids that are afraid of the dark that there is nothing to be scared of.

Brilliant! I read this like four times to myself before insisting on reading it to my husband before bed. At almost 30, I'm still terrified of the dark.

I love the idea of The Dark being personified in this story about a little boy facing his fear of the dark. And of course I love Klassen's simple yet distinct illustrations that go along with it.

Are you afraid of the dark? Laszlo was too...then the dark came to visit! Great story for kids that are struggling with fear of the dark; Snicket tries to explain the reason for the dark in a way that kids can understand

Decided to start off with something small by Mr. Snicket. Loved this little story.
I do plan on reading unfortunate events as well, since I did love the early 2000s movie :)

As with, [b:I Want My Hat Back|11233988|I Want My Hat Back|Jon Klassen|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327888784s/11233988.jpg|16160067], I'm just not diggin' the creepy vibe in this picture book. I don't dislike all creepy picture books. I loved [b:Creepy Carrots|13259987|Creepy Carrots!|Aaron Reynolds|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1326317589s/13259987.jpg|18461490] and [b:Lester's Dreadful Sweaters|14431301|Lester's Dreadful Sweaters|K.G. Campbell|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1363130592s/14431301.jpg|20073368], for example. But this just struck me as weird and disturbing, especially how the dark talks to the little boy. It might be fun to read aloud to a group of older kids, but I'll tell you something I see again and again: it's really hard to get older kids to read picture books. Most of the time, once a kid hits 2nd or 3rd grade, they are done with so-called "baby" books.
Even with two great names attached to it, I can't say I'm a big fan of this book.
