Yeah not very politically correct/modern but still a good adventure. It took a while to really get good but once it did it was easy to see why this is considered one of the classic adventures. Given that it’s fairly racist I’d recommend it only to those that are fans of classic adventure or are looking to read an influential novel.
It's a fun and easy read. Heard about it on a podcast and the book does lay the foundations for all treasure seeking adventures hither. An easy 19th century language read about adventure, danger, and persevering. Does have some dated views but it is what it was.
Given the age of this book, I knew it was going to go one of two ways. The opening gave me such high hopes for it going well. Then we got to the meet and wow did it disappoint.
I imagine this should have read like and Indiana Jones movies but so much was left to be desired. So much.
My first big hang up was once they met the tribe the plot just took a sharp left turn and decided to hang out in la la land. So much of this subplot was useless. I honestly hardly paid attention.
Then when they did get to the mines… I just didn’t feel like the story was well written.

I listened to this on an audio book, but I think I would have enjoyed it more reading it. It's a great story of adventure through Africa - the search for a missing brother and treasure. The group gets tied up with a native tribe and goes to battle along the way. The hunting scenes made me squeamish, admittedly, but did give an insight into game hunting. The ending of the book was just right. Overall, this was an enjoyable story.
