Arawiya was once a land with magic, but when the Six Sisters fell to the Lion of the Night, magic vanished. It was replaced with a curse, spreading out from the island of Sharr, where all the monsters the Sisters of Old imprisoned, a deadly forest eating up more and more of the land called Arz. If you venture into its depths, you will lose your way and you will become prey to the ifrit who roam there.
Unless you’re Zafira, the Hunter of Demenhur. Only she can enter the Arz and find her way back home safely, but even she cannot stop its deadly march into her home. When the Silver Witch offers her a quest to enter Sharr, bring back magic, and break the curse, Zafira knows no one else would be able to navigate its deadly terrain. On the other side of Arawiya, the Sultan learns of the Silver Witch’s quest and sends his own son, Nasir, to find and kill the Demenhur Hunter and bring back the lost magic for himself. Now the pair must race across Sharr to find the magic before the Arz swallows Arawiya whole. But neither know just what the Silver Witch has planned, or what lurks in the shadows of Sharr.

I really enjoyed the world building in this book. There were several non-English words used that were easy to glean the meaning of through sheer context. Nasir is delightfully grumpy and tortured, and Altair is super fun when compared to him. Their chemistry is a bit strained at first, but it smooths out the more time they spend together, the grumpy and the teasing. Then you have Zafira, who has her own tortured trauma to deal with, as well as the expectations her friends have set on her, of destroying the Arz and being a strong female icon in a world where women belong in the kitchen. Their enemies-to-lovers dynamic is quite excellent, especially when you consider they’re two grumpies with a sunshine companion.
