100 pages in and the actual story still hadn't started... The writing was also getting on my nerves.

This is a really remarkable book especially since it is YA. The world building is wonderfully done, and I really enjoyed a Middle Eastern inspired fantasy, the vibes were gorgeous. That being said I would not recommend for anyone new to fantasy this is high, dense, fantasy with characters I had a bit of a time keeping straight.
I really enjoyed this and will read the second in the series which I rarely do!

It took me AGES to actually get into this book, including 2-3 DNF's before I finally forced myself to read it.
It was a beautiful book with detailed intermediate imagery and an Ancient Arabia inspired setting in the land of Arawiya.
The characters were all so well-written, with conflicts, backstories, and unique personalities. The setting was highly detailed, the plot well thought out, and the conflict troubling.
The minimal amount of "romance" (more like tension than romance) was something I loved about this book. Nowadays, it's sort of a "requirement" for every book to be heavy with romance, tension, and smut. This book was more plot-focused and character-focused than romantic- which I enjoyed and hope to see in other books.
The one issue I had with this book is that I never felt that wow-factor, or that passion you feel when you're utterly in love with a book. I plan to read book 2, and possibly reread in the future (which I believe will help me to better comprehend the plot and truly appreciate the incredible writing).
That is the only negative note I have to say. Asides from that, it was a nearly perfect book. Also can't ignore the fact it's written by a fellow Muslimah!! We love the Muslim author representation, I look up to women like Hafsah Faizal and Taherah Mafi because I am also a Muslimah who aspires to write. Overall: I recommend!!

We Hunt the Flame is a poetic fantasy that follows a lot of the classic traveling towards a quest storyline.  Despite the familiar setup the story feels new and fresh, and not just because it's set within a region and culture often overlooked by traditional publishers but because of Faizal's imaginative writing, well written dialogue, and fully developed character motivations and actions.  I will definitely be continuing the series and reading more by Faizal in the future.
