Robert Graysmith covers his own and the various San Francisco Bay Area police departments's investigations into the Zodiac killer in brilliantly intricate detail, as he covers everything from the first confirmed killing in 1968 to every possible lead taken by the lead investigators on the case, working with detectives on police forces in San Francisco (closely with Dave Toschi here and Bill Armstrong prior to his transfer), Vallejo (especially Lieutenant Jim Husted), Napa, and the department of Criminal Identification and Investigation (CI&I). Using a variety of sources, including the above mentioned, case notes, crime scene visits, taped interviews, CI&I Handwriting reports, composite sketches, and the letters sent by the Zodiac killer himself, Graysmith pulls together an incredibly thorough account of a decade and a half long hunt for a man who has become known as "America's Most Elusive Serial Killer" (according to the cover of the book itself). Even with the amount of time and effort that had gone into searching for this killer, he still remains unfound - the case still remains unsolved - making it one of the most notable serial murder cases in American history.

Listened to this as a book on tape during our holiday travels. A great time!

I'd give the book five stars on intrigue, content, and mystery. Just can't figure out how a book that's nearly 30 years old is so poorly edited. Several character names are spelled differently from paragraph to paragraph on the same page. And it's written in dated diary form and at one point the dating erroneously jumped a decade on one entry. Mind boggling. But very interesting.

I love true crime and I thought this was a good book. Unformatly, I couldn't read it all in one gi due to the font size but nothing against the writer.
