Really appreciated the story behind the tablets, the history, and the insights and background to the meaning in the story.

The Buried Book has some interesting info, but it's a mess, and by the end it falls apart. There is surprisingly little information about the Great Epic of Gilgamesh, a lot of speculation and literary musings, and a long epilogue with almost no relationship to the rest of the book.

This was a really enjoyable story told in layers—starting with most recent times and events and ending with a discussion of Gilgamesh itself, and a dash of Saddam Hussein’s Iraq as the epilogue just to spice things up. The rediscovery of The Epic of Gilgamesh is fascinating and infuriating in near equal measure throughout its history, and Damrosh does a thorough but incredibly consumable job of laying it out for the audience.

This is hands-down the best book to start learning about the oldest human civilization. Leads to many other great books!

Engaging, full of fascinating little tidbits of history, and thoughtful. I will be thinking about this book long after reading it.
