A longer review because (I think?) I’m the target demographic. This has been on my bookshelf forever, and I am…. So disappointed. She describes herself as a white bisexual leftist, which, hey me too! And yet, this book felt so centered around white guilt/fragility. The constant pausing to assure her readers she is 1000% intersectional, woke, ally!!! I don’t know what I was looking for, but this didn’t expound on anything about bisexuality or feminism in a meaningful or progressive way. Despite her white disclaimers and leftist label, this book reeks of white feminism. I wish I’d known this was more-so a memoir about a girl’s sexual escapades and white guilt. Congrats on the sex though.
Biphobia is very real; that being said, I was so disheartened by the constant blame she focused on the queer community! She truly made it seem like there is no gay/lesbian bar willing to accept us, and lesbians are the natural enemy of bisexuals. :(
I don’t find the author’s attempted humor funny; sad to report I found her kind of annoying and physically cringed more often than not. The whole book felt like a mix of a stupid buzzfeed article and an insta- infographic that white, female (and a little to proud of the political label) democrats post.
Problematic one liners off the top oh my head:
she kinda laughs off the fact that she became more radical just to impress a love interest
She compares her situation to the movie ROOM (a woman is held hostage for years in a shed, r*ped, and assaulted)…. ?

As a bisexual who also has only dated men in my 20s and is a bit of a mess, I feel very seen. ~representation matters~

i've been reflecting a lot about being bi this pride month and this was a great read to go along with that journey. that said, i think this book is best suited for a white cis person who is brand new to their bisexuality and queer politics. still a lovely read regardless if you take it for what it is and where the author is in their journey!

The first book I ever read about bisexuality! Winston’s memoir felt very affirming to read, I felt less alone in my experiences. A lot of interesting commentary that opened my eyes to new, validating perspectives.

Actually really enjoyed this book - probably a 3.5/3.75 really. The writing style is often not for me and I found it a little jarring - hence the lower score - but I loved the subject matter & especially Jen Winston’s exploration of it :) some of it came across a little preachy but also I suppose that’s a consequence of my own experience/knowledge of some of it … not to brag or anything :P I loved the bits about platonic love & I loved the warmth and obvious love about their partner & I loved the writing about the wrestle about identity (the so called “insequeerity”) Overall, I enjoyed this book and monched on it very quickly!! Would recommend!!
