I expected this to be more about their individual experience as a trans person. I think it's well written but I honestly don't agree with some of their points.
I appreciated that they acknowledged that there are some women who are more masculine and some men who are more feminine. That this alone doesn't affect whether or not you are trans.
I listened to the audiobook so I'd like to pick up a hard copy to check on the cited research studies.

I wish everyone could read this book. So thoughtful and thought provoking. Also so much more than just a trans history from a trans narrative. The author so elegantly discussing the gender/sex interconnectivity and separation and the various fluid natures for both that I wish I could express myself. With the constant underlying implied hope that as people when we know better we will do better. I wish I had access to a bibliography or index reference of all the historical texts and studies cited throughout-may have to get myself a physical copy just to be able to reference.

Holy!
C.N. Lester is an incredible writer who not only engages the reader actively but manages to include so much information in a rather small amount of space given the scope of their topic. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in broader LGBTQA2S+ topics and for those who are seeking helpful starting points and additional resources to supplement their own transitions. I very much look forward to C.N's next work.

"How can it be that both trans people and the journalists who write about us believe ourselves to be talking about the same subject, and yet have such wildly different beliefs, words, and ways of speaking?"
"We go on television, then try to protect ourselves from the inevitable abuse that follows, because we hope to be heard by the people who would never dream of watching an online news show produced by trans people. And we become complicit in the machine, knowing that if other people had not done the same for us, we would not be here today to keep the fight going.

Part-memoir, part-social narrative, part-history lesson.
I learnt a lot from this book, and I really enjoyed the author's writing style and the cohesiveness of the text.

The chapter on the Danish Girl was incredible - and now I too wanna fall in a rabbit hole on trans history throughout the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
Overall really interesting and worth reading, even if you are already familiar with the topics at hand.
