Superb book. A challenging read exploring the far reaching consequences of a child's overactive imagination coupled with conviction and witnessing a crime. Set before and during WWII, McEwan masterfully explores multiple POVs both female and male. Would recommend highly.

Though it took me a moment to get engaged within the story, the characters and the plot were extremely gripping. The most unengaging parts where the lengthy scene descriptions but the manner of writing which explored the emotions of each character deeply and intimately appealed to me.
One of the strengths of this book was the quick progression in the romantic relationship between Robbie and Cecilia as it was lasted long enough to be satisfying when it occurred but succient enough to not overshadow the main focus of the book. The book conjured WW2 and the emotions surrounding it well but in a way with which I am familiar. The revelation that the book has been written Briony was something I had a sense was happening yet the intimate characterisation and detailed perspectives made me suspect I was wrong. Going back and rereading the book through the lens that it is Briony's writing will undoubtedly reveal even more depths.
