Mostly Harmless

Douglas Adams

3.77 AVERAGE

Story: 3/5. It has the quirks and the commentary, but it concludes as something very specifically crafted to conclude. There shouldn't be anything intrinsically wrong with that, but it somehow manages to lose the nihilistic appeal of the previous books. The resolution itself could be seen as quite a nihilistic one, sure, but it is still journey-focused and that journey seems a bit forced at times. Arthur, too, slipped into old habits.

Characterisation: 3/5. There wasn't much that was new this time. It was mostly just the old gang rounding things up. However, the addition of the little round bot and the Guide Mark II led to some interesting moments. The reveal of the Guide II to Random, particularly, was blissfully vivid. Outside of that, there was quite some fodder.

Language: 4/5. Odd. There seemed to be less room for all of Adams's usual flavour here. It was still there, but it did not quite soar and flourish in the way that it usually does. I did not find myself lingering on any specific passages for very long.

10/15: Mostly okay.

An underwhelming end to the series, but fun nevertheless.

A really great way to end this excellent series

I do not rate this as well as the previous books...slipshod, at best!

“A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.”

I liked the book, but I missed Marvin and Zaphod. Trillian also had a small role to play here. I think that the best books were where all the characters had a fair role to play. Their interaction together was just spot on and I missed that in this final book of this series (and the previous one). Also this book was just less funny. But it was still a fun read!

“Anything that happens, happens. Anything that, in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen. Anything that, in happening, causes itself to happen again, happens again. It doesn’t necessarily do it in chronological order, though.”

This was a shitshow. I have read that Adams admitted this was a bleak and bad book because he was going through some stuff in his personal life and it reflected on the last book.

It was a lazily constructed ending of a series in my opinion.

Yes, it is in a way absurd and in tone with the book – I certainly didn’t expect them to all have long and happy lives on their planets of birth with 3 children, a house, and a porch swing.
Yes, most answers to life’s questions in the book are ridiculous and making fun of any sort of search for meaning.

But that doesn't mean that I don't have the right to dislike this part of the series.

It was bad and rushed. The ending happens in like a few pages, and I could see that the author might have had ideas for a different ending but opted for this one. The irony was there, and that was about the only good part of this book.

The characters didn’t even feel real, more like caricatures of themselves. The overall tone of this book is hopeless.
Spoiler I never got the idea that Trillian wanted a child so why the fuck did he give her one when she clearly doesn’t give a shit about the child? Only so that the plot somehow could pull Arthur into it all.

Even the humor wasn't there, ok, there were maybe a few good parts with his characteristic humor but the rest was boring to go through.

Final thoughts: If you set your bar low then maybe read this book, as for me this was so unsatisfying I will never get over that.
