I enjoyed learning about the history of all of these drinks and how they fall into world history. Most of it was pretty entertaining and enjoyable, but some was a bit repetitive, and a few of the claims about the importance of certain beverages were a bit of a stretch, particularly for the tea portion.

A fairly straightforward look at six major drinks that are fixtures of modern culture…and aren’t water…

A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standag is a fun history anthology with a terrible name as glassware is rarely used for at least one of the drinks.

To be uofront, this covers six “drinks” that are a major part of society. These are wine, coffee, soda (specifically coca-cola), tea, spirits (mostly rum and whiskey), and beer.

The author wisely chooses not to try and tell an executive history of his subjects as even one could fill several volumes.

Instead, he covers two specific parts of each drink’s history…
1) how they were first developed (either by alchemists, college academics, starving settlers, or other unusual inventors)
And
2) how they became ingrained in pop culture and everyday life (sometimes utilizing the specific events that showed they were “established” either in major political history, warfare, religious reasons, or something else).

This is certainly a decent book to check out, wslexiallybifnyoi are someone like me that enjoys having interesting drink anecdotes…

I can’t rate it lower because it was actually good for a book about history… it kept repeating the same things over and over again though

It took me a while to become really interested in the book, but once I did it was N extremely engaging and intriguing way too look at the history of the world and our future.
