I guess now I'm rereading this book every year! I love the descriptions of Astrid's clothing. I like to think I have an eclectic and fashionable closet, sort of like hers (although much less expensive!).

I reread this because I've been in a huge reading slump and I can't find anything else that is both light and entertaining. Also, I forgot how much swearing there is in this book! This is definitely an adult read. Don't recommend this to kids or teens!

I think I only enjoyed the last 30 pages. And there wasn't truly an ending, so now I have to decide if I am going to slog through the entire trilogy just to have some sense of peace.

There’s something about the writing in this book that gives an undertone of racism and misogyny. I liked the plot and world building and I’m unfortunately too invested to not continue reading the next instalment.

3.5 stars. There is a lot of characters and background information, it was hard to keep up.

Quite the fun little romp of a novel.

The story is about multiple members of the Young, T’sien, and Shang clans. Yes they are crazy rich and Kwan writes about most of the members in a satirical way. Because I don’t know about y’all, but I can’t relate to being in a family that has access to umpteen billions of dollars! However, he grounds the story in some really remarkable characters.

Rachel Chu is dating Nick Young and they have the most adorable relationship. They are so cute together, their little quips are swoon worthy, and they are relationship goals. However, Nick’s family is all about social status and and this drives a wedge into their relationship. Nick is a sweetheart though and Rachel is too (her and her moms story/upbringing is kind of sad but also very motivational).

Astrid (one of Nick’s cousins) was another amazingly dynamic character to read. Torn between sticking up for herself and swallowing her “pride” made for some interesting growth. I enjoyed her arc. I mean, I was audibly cheering for this girl.

It’s a huge cast of characters. So thankful for that family tree! And if you’re struggling with the first 100 pages, I did too, it gets better after that!

Drawbacks: some parts get very descriptive and I just get bored with “lists” of descriptions. I get it, you’re building this fantasy but we get it, these people have money. Also I felt like the climax came very late in the book and since it did the resolve was too short and then it was over.
