Salinger is an all time favorite of mine and I believe one of the finest artists of the mid 20th century. I’m currently making my way through his entire anthology and thus far have not been at all disappointed. Nine Stories is a clever collection of sketches…fragments of memories…intricate tales. It’s quite funny as well, in a way. Would certainly recommend- you can’t go wrong with short stories and Salinger.
i really don't like short story books and i keep picking them up without checking first

Some stories are better than others. A lot of blow by blow action. He picked up the ash tray with his left hand then turned and looked out the window, then sat back down on the bed and holding the ash tray between forefinger and thumb, placed it delicately on his knee. I made that up but sometimes it's paragraphs of that. He/She looked here and moved this part of his/her body in this way and then moved it this other way, and then itched his/her eyebrow etc.
The dialogue is the best part. And there are moments where he's got you reaching for epiphanies that are mind opening.

Disturbing and thought-provoking. I didn't exactly enjoy the stories but was impressed by how they each conjured a slice of life and didn't explain themselves.
These nine stories appear to be written during the 40's and 50's and it seems Salinger spent some time studying people, how they thought and what they did. All the stories are different and a couple of them I thought would make excellent script for The Twilight Zone. The only common thing I noticed was in each story it appears that smoking was the fashion as at least one character lit up, that's something to be remembered when the modern day authors write stories reflecting this era...remember at least one character needs to smoke. I think this work would fit quite well with my recent Great Courses: The Dark Side of Human Nature so if you per chance have read that book first these stories would really fall under examples of Human Nature because that's for the most part exactly what they are. The soldier before and after the war, some developed what was termed “shell shock”, now it's labeled PTSD but how could every soldier who lived through the horror of war process their experiences the same way. I do recommend this work by Salinger especially if you were able to appreciate The Catcher in the Rye.
