Rereading this as an adult, it hits me so much harder how much early parenthood is in this collection. Precocious children and the miserable people who surround them, who may in turn feed into the transformation of those children full of wonder and joy and intelligence into that miserable form over time. Or pull them out of it. The deep spirituality Salinger writes about always comes to a head with the material reality the characters face. “Nothing in the voice of the cicada intimates how soon it will die.”

Love the writing style, but the stories ended too abruptly for me to give this book more than 3 stars. Rated PG 13 for language and, in some stories, sexual innuendo or violence.
fast-paced
This collection was a delight to read. I was surprised by narrative turns at every story and loved his characterization of children especially.
