Laat ik beginnen met dat dit een duologie had kunnen zijn. De eerste helft van dit boek voelde zo repetitive en was ik eerlijk gezegd vooral verveeld tijdens het lezen, en dat terwijl boek 2 ook al een filler book was. Het is simpelweg veel te lang gerekt voor wat het is.
Na de 50% mark begon het verhaal gelukkig boeiender te worden, maar ook hier had ik de ‘grote twist’ al van verre zien aankomen doordat er op exact dezelfde manier op werd gehint als op de plottwist in Reckless. Zonde.
Sommige scenes die emotionele impact op me moesten maken deden me ook niet zoveel, doordat ik simpelweg wist wie de ‘endgame’ love interest was en ik dus wist dat Lauren Roberts bepaalde dingen simpelweg niet zou laten gebeuren. (+ een bepaalde scene leek wel heeeeeel erg op een scene uit The Serpent and the Wings of Night…)
Al met al ging ik met niet al te hoge verwachtingen het boek in, en was dat ook precies wat ik kreeg. Een mediocre boek. Net als de rest van de serie dit voor mij was helaas.
Ik moet dan ook zeggen dat ik vooral blij ben dit boek (/de serie) nu eindelijk uit te hebben.

You can see the exact point where Roberts decides she can't be bothered to write this book anymore.
The first half of the book was so promising, only to be rushed near the end.
The entire Powerless trilogy puts so much focus on Kai and Pae (which I admittedly loved) at the expense of the plot and side characters. This results in a rushed ending where, all of a sudden, the side characters matter (who weren't memorable enough in the first place) and a whole bunch of unnecessary plot twists. There is only one secondary character who was kind of fleshed out, and he was ruined—again, unnecessary.
However, the first half of the book was great; hence the 3.75 stars.

I actually rolled my eyes a few times. How many times can the author say “formidable,” “inevitable,” and “reverence”. This was better than reckless, but that’s a low bar. The pacing was off and the writing was repetitive. I wanted to finish the story, and some of the plot was okay, but I couldn’t get past the writing. Also, kitt changing at the end made no sense because we have been IN HIS POV and he didn’t say that stuff (make it make sense!!!) Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be reading more from Lauren Roberts—I just wanted to finish this series.
