In some ways, it's strange to read this after having seen the anime. I'm mostly noticing the differences from the show, like Hughes' edge and Ed's ghost limb/nightmare sequence, both of which I love seeing. The philosophical thematics kick into high gear here with Tucker, and the implications all that has for Ed and his own acts of sacrilege. Ed realizes he's not a god or a devil, but only human, with all the fragility and helplessness that implies. Scar comes into the narrative just when we begin to fear the unnatural and unholy thing alchemy can be, and it's a powerful entrance.
