The series takes a quick turn into grim territory, with the infamous fifth chapter basically playing out like a horror story. The three subsequent chapters deal mainly with the consequences of genocide, terrorism, and civil war, issues the Elric brothers really are not mature enough to fully understand yet. It's clear that Arakawa already knew where the story was heading at this stage, and gave her protagonists plenty of room to grow. The art hasn't quite reached its full potential, but it's still clean and the action is easy to follow.
Better than the 1st volume. Story continues to develop, emotions touched, characters and relationships develop, and the artwork is very good, except that fight scenes are still relatively confusing to me Still not hooked yet. But can get a glimmer of how this story has the potential to grow to something that has so many people hooked.

The chapter with Nina and Alexander will never not be disturbing. It is a good chapter and important to the overall story, but damn I always feel like skipping this one (or the episode in the anime).
The first volume of Fullmetal Alchemist underwhelmed me, I was neither intrigued nor disgusted and because my brother loves the anime so much I continued. OH MY GOODNESS am I glad I did, this volume broke me. It really showed the terrible side of humanity and brought in much more interrelated plot development as opposed to the self contained stories of the first one. If you didn't love the first one at least give this one a go before making a decision about the series.
In this installment the world became darker and more complex which was great.* I liked the additional characters and challenges the brothers faced.

I enjoyed the first volume fine, but it really picked up in this volume. It's still funny with light moments, but it also has a little more meat and power. After the first volume, I wasn't sure how much of the series I'd read. After this volume, I'll definitely keep going.
