I enjoyed this! I was worried going in that it might be too YA or too dramatic but I got into it easily and enjoyed the tone. It reminds me of The Magicians in a lot of ways but the POV character does a lot less judging every woman by their appearance (a huge plus). I like El's reverse chosen one thing and her dynamic with Orion. The magic is cool and can contain lots of complexity and interesting possibilities without being overwhelming. I look forward to book 2!

Oftentimes the world-building interrupts/slows down the action in a way that got a bit boring after some time. But the world is interesting, if very dark and violent, and I liked how Novik explores the moral implications of the system that’s set up to deal with that violence. I liked the characters a lot, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

The main character is pretty unlikeable, there's a tiresome banter with her and the "love interest", and most of all I feel like the author didn't really reckon with how horribly grim the world she built was. The cheapness of life in this book was a major turnoff.
