It was interesting to find out about another cult. I had no previous knowledge of this cult or any of the murders that happened. Wish she would have acknowledged the messed up teachings of other people mentioned. Not sure if she escaped one cult and ended up joining another with Bill Gothard being mentioned a few times.

While I am absolutely heartbroken by and empathetic to the trauma that Anna LeBaron has gone through, this book read more like an attempt to proselytize to Mormons, polygamists and those still slightly more fundamentalist than the fundamentalist mega churches name dropped throughout the text. I can’t help but wonder if she would’ve gotten better mental health help sooner had she not been constantly in religious-based schooling and counseling. That being said, I do appreciate her advocacy for counseling - religious or secular - as necessary for healing trauma rather than just relying on spirituality.

The writer is not the most apt or enthralling storyteller, but she doesn't have to be. She revealed the raw truth of many horrific things in these pages and I admire her bravery. I felt her pain and her healing throughout the book, and the message that religion can still be there for you after you were exploited in its name is powerful. Overall, this is a powerful story of breaking and healing.
