I had high hopes after reading so many good reviews, but this book just didn’t do it for me. It was at times hard to read and cringy. A lot of the book was predictable and at times, over exaggerated. I finished it all the way through just to see what happened, but I skipped a lot towards the end. I felt like I was reading a Wattpad book from 2012.

dark emotional sad slow-paced

This book explains the beginning of the love story for Mallory and Christopher. Christopher's father wants him to marry his ex girlfriend who he is also business parters with. So he doesn't have to, Chris and Mallory decide to act like they're in a relationship to trick those around them but unbeknownst to each other, they both have feelings that continue to develop that they're trying to ignore. This book was tense as there were a lot of topics they had to work through and learning to trust and love again. It also leads way to two more parts in this series.

While I enjoyed this book for the most part, there were some parts that felt a bit overdramatized that took me out of the story. The royalty/family empire trope felt a bit too on the nose at times even though it was a central trait of Chris’ backstory. I loved reading Chris and Mallory fall in love with each other but must we constantly write painful stories for our Black characters?? It pains me to see Mallory written as such a delightful character that still had to experience so much suffering. Despite this, I’m becoming a growing fan of JL Seegars and looking forward to a (hopefully) beautiful resolution to the sad story of Chris and Mallory.
