This was an incredible read for majority of the novel. I really enjoyed the slow burn and the development of the mystery. I enjoyed the subtle inclusion of horror elements.
However there was one section towards the end that quickly removed me from the story and left me grappling with the author’s motivations/real life positioning. I’m not sure if my interpretation was correct and think it would benefit from a group discussion.

So, this was a strange read for me. I didn't really like the characters nor did I like the writing style, but the plot sucked me in. This is also strange for me because I don't read horror and I definitely don't read ghost stories (they freak me out way too much). But I didn't know this book was either of those until after I picked it up.

So, there were a few things that I simply didn't enjoy about this book:
  1. I didn't feel like Teddy sounded like a five-year-old. Maybe seven but not five (then again I don't speak with five-year-olds often (or ever) so...)
  2. There were undertones of transphobia which was a big yikes and made me incredibly uncomfortable.

But, the story itself kept me incredibly immersed and has been on my mind since I finished it, which is what I want from a mystery thriller (which I thought this was). I would've given this book four stars if it weren't for bullet point two.

I’m not sure if the book intended to be transphobic or simply have a big “plot twist” but it was a weird choice for sure.

ahh i like how intriguing this story and it's actually quite well written.. as long as you can get past the overtly cliched trope of "atheistic vegan leftist millenial parents" like how avid fox news views people who are not conservative in their book lol

also the epilogue was boring and the book would be better off without that part 😭

Well. That was a book. It was also racist and transphobic and fat phobic! And men should stop writing women if they don’t want to bother getting to know women. Surprised I finished it, truly.

The writing in this book is very amatour. Fells more like a creative writing exercise that a novel.
