Terrible ending felt like it could have ended differently
i managed to be hooked throughout the whole entirety of this book. which can be a hard thing to find in reading.
i don’t necessarily think it’s perfect, i bet when i wake up tomorrow i’ll think of new flaws i found in the book. but for right now I’ll leave it at 4 stars.
normally in horror and thrillers i prefer for a more psychological approach and at first i was worried that this book would be too paranormal for that but thankfully i was proven wrong. and i actually enjoyed the supernatural aspect so that’s fun!

Gah I was really enjoying this book (probably would have given 4 stars) up until the ending! He didn’t stick the landing IMO. And he also used transphobia as a plot device which just gave me the ick… we learn towards the end that the atheist liberal parents have been forcing the 5 year old child to “be transgender” the entire time, which is problematic in many ways and also just didn’t make sense in the story. Super unnecessary and gross plot device. Adding to the subpar ending, I really dislike “one year later” epilogue style endings that wrap up the loose ends. They always feel cheesy and unnecessary, and this one was no different.
I enjoyed the pacing of the book and felt that the vibe was definitely creepy and it was hard to put down. The illustrations added a lot to the creepiness factor and were a unique touch! Overall, a quick and engaging read but I did not enjoy how it wrapped up.
